Freedombox (freedombox.org) is a project started by Eben Moglen, a professor and lawyer at Colombia University in New York City, to allow a secure, low-electrical power server to keep data secure for personal (or for small communities of people)
Freedombox was designed to be easy to use and maintain. At its current state it is probably beyond the ability of “Mom&Pop(TM)” to set up easily, but certainly could be used by Mom&Pop as end users once set up.
